To prove the efficiency of its electric sedan ID.7, Volkswagen has just conducted a range test. Equipped with the large 86 kWh battery, an ID.7 Pro S covered the impressive distance of 941 km on a single charge. However, this experiment was conducted at an average speed of 29 km/h.

Officially communicated for 702 km of range in a mixed WLTP cycle, the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S could, under certain conditions known as “rolling”, go much further, as the German automaker has just demonstrated. To begin with, the range test was conducted on the Nardò test track (Italy), without climbs, descents, traffic lights, etc. Additionally, once started, it likely maintained a constant speed, without acceleration or many stops, that the large electric car Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S covered 941 km in 33h15 min with a single battery charge. This is far, very far, from “real life.” Nonetheless, Volkswagen indicates in its statement that the Nardò circuit, 12.5 km long, named “Low Speed Ring”, “allows for the simulation of diverse traffic conditions and testing the vehicle’s endurance.”

Under optimal conditions, with temperatures between 5° and 15°C, the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S is capable of running for a long time, knowing that it develops a power of 210 kW/286 hp and a torque of 545 Nm. The ID.7 Pro S also weighs 2,230 kg.

Let’s get to the point: during our tests conducted on all types of open roads, we drive normally, without attempting any range records. The idea is to gauge the “real” range of an electric car. During our test of the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro (2,184 kg – photo above), with the same power as the ID.7 Pro S, but with a smaller 77 kWh battery, we observed an average consumption of 19.6 kWh/100 km. Note that our test of the ID.7 Pro was conducted in the south of France, on a route consisting of small roads and national highways. Result: a real range of 392.85 km for the ID.7 Pro, compared to 618 km in the mixed WLTP cycle. We leave you to interpret these figures…

Finally, the Volkswagen ID.7 is also offered in a wagon version, the ID.7 Tourer, which is quite rare in the electric car market.
