The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the most timeless 4×4 in automotive history. Originally developed in the 1970s as a military vehicle, the German 4×4 quickly evolved into various versions. The goal was to compete with the Range Rover, and over time, the G-Class became a “Super 4×4,” seen more often in the streets of Monaco than in nature. This time, the very essence of the G-Class is being questioned due to the energy transition. Here is our test drive of the 100% electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class 580 EQ, boasting 587 hp.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has transcended decades with a certain “insolence,” evolving very little over time and almost mocking new automotive trends. Unfortunately, one trend that cannot be ignored is the EU’s decision to ban the sale of combustion and hybrid cars from 2035. In this context, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is ditching its exhaust pipe. The new 100% electric version of this iconic 4×4 was introduced during the G-Class facelift, three years after the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG was revealed. The G 580 EQ measures 15.2 feet in length and weighs 6,799 pounds.

In terms of design, the facelift of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class includes changes to its grille and bumpers. The grille now features four horizontal bars instead of three beneath the vertical slats.

Both the front and rear bumpers of the German 4×4 are more rounded than the previous model. The cubic silhouette, a trademark of the G-Class, remains unchanged and, hopefully, will never change.

Before stepping inside the 100% electric G 580 EQ, let’s touch upon its military roots. The G-Class is still used, once adapted and modified, as a vehicle capable of operating in conflicts. At the recent Eurosatory exhibition, we encountered the impressive Rheinmetall Caracal, which you won’t find in your local Mercedes-Benz dealership.

Returning to the 100% electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ, the grand space offered to occupants and the interior architecture both remind us we’re boarding a G-Class.

The rest of the G-Class 100% electric remains a luxury vehicle with an indispensable dose of high-tech. The MBUX system with screens side by side under a single panel is the best example.

The assembly quality is just perfect, as are the material choices. For the most demanding customers, everything can be personalized on the G-Class through the Mercedes-Benz Manufaktur program. The cargo volume stands at 19.6 cubic feet, which is 3 cubic feet less than other G-Class models.

Like a PS5, this 2024 G-Class is a real “Toy for Boy” with controls and buttons providing access to a multitude of settings, including various driving modes. Yes, you read that right, the G 580 EQ offers a “Rock” mode, alongside “Trail” mode for off-road driving.

Time for the road and off-road test of the 100% electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ with four motors, one for each wheel. Regular readers (thank you very much) know we often say in our tests that once you’ve driven one electric car, you’ve driven them all. It’s different with the 100% electric G 580 EQ. The sensation of complete domination of the road is immensely satisfying, and acceleration is powerful as soon as you press the right pedal. The G 580 EQ’s technical specs boast a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.7 seconds (top speed: 112 mph).

The contrast between driving comfort and immense power is incomparable. Importantly, this G 580 EQ sits on a ladder frame chassis capable of supporting heavy loads, perfectly fitting this model which includes a hefty 116 kWh battery.

Of course, in corners, one must consider the over 3-ton weight of this 4×4. However, the flaws of a 4×4 are also its strengths. The G 580 EQ reveals an extremely comfortable road behavior. At its controls, you fear nothing, except perhaps seeing the battery drain? This electric vehicle is so fun to drive that energy consumption isn’t closely monitored. On paper, the G 580 EQ’s range is a maximum of 294 miles on the WLTP cycle, but in practice, it can quickly drop. During our test, we easily exceeded 30 kWh/100 km while having fun.

Off the beaten path, let’s start with the brilliant “Rock” mode. Once engaged, you can spin the 4×4 on itself, making your head spin!

Mercedes-Benz excels in the off-road capabilities of this 100% electric and electronic G-Class 580 EQ. The intelligent traction control system makes it a true member of the “G-Class lineage.”

For recharging, using a fast DC charger with a maximum power of 200 kW, Mercedes-Benz states a charging time of 31 minutes to go from 10% to 80% battery.

In conclusion, the transformation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class into a fully electric 4×4 is a success. For the most adventurous, finding a charging station in the mountains or elsewhere might be challenging, but the 100% electric G 580 EQ genuinely impressed us. The G 580 EQ AMG Line starts at $186,500. There’s still time to believe in Santa Claus!
