The issue of CO2 emissions is becoming critical for European automakers. Imposed by the EU, the CAFE regulation (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requires these same automakers, under penalty of fines, to meet an annual average maximum of CO2/km emissions across all productions. Knowing that CAFE 2025 will be tightened to 81 g/km, Stellantis, Renault Group, and other automotive groups could face heavy financial penalties. To avoid huge fines, mergers between automakers will be created. Thus, Stellantis will be able to buy CO2 emission credits from Tesla.

CAFE 2025 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) is a real financial and economic headache for automakers, as billions of euros are at stake. By regrouping within alliances, which is permitted by the European Commission, Stellantis, accompanied by Toyota, Ford, Mazda, and Subaru, should therefore buy CO2 emission credits from Tesla. Simply put, the “polluters” will pay the “clean” automakers, those that market electric cars, to avoid being sanctioned by the EU.

On the side of Stellantis, it is stated that this agreement with Tesla will help “achieve CO2 emission goals for 2025 while optimizing resources”. It should be noted that another group should be formed by Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Polestar, the latter two brands belonging to the Chinese giant Geely. It should also be recalled that Smart became, in 2019, a joint venture founded between the Mercedes-Benz group (Daimler at the time) and Geely.

On the side of Renault Group, while Luca de Meo (CEO of Renault Group – CEO of Ampere), via the ACEA, had put pressure, at the end of 2019, on Brussels, by requesting the postponement of CAFE 2025, it is thought that mergers or alliances will weaken the European automotive industry. In any case, Tesla will enrich itself at the expense of Stellantis and others, like Geely
