On the sidelines of the Rétromobile 2025 show, which will host the official Artcurial Motorcars auction, RM Sotheby’s will organize another exceptional event at the Louvre Museum. Among the 136 lots in this RM Sotheby’s auction, there is a 1984 Renault 5 Turbo 2 estimated between €80,000 and €100,000.
While Renault has recently officially announced the return of the Renault 5 Turbo in a new 100% electric version, the classic model is highly sought after at auctions. Thus, the 1984 R5 Turbo 2, the subject of this article, could even exceed €100,000 at the RM Sotheby’s auction next February, organized alongside the Rétromobile 2025 show (from February 5 to 9). For 33 years, this same Renault 5 was owned by a Japanese collector. Then, in 2021, it moved to the UK. Today, its current German owner wishes to part with it.
In perfect condition, with only 10,468 km (6,503 miles) on the odometer, this Renault 5 Turbo 2 features a “Pearl White” body color and a beige fabric interior. Let’s admit that the photos published by RM Sotheby’s demonstrate that this R5 Turbo has been perfectly preserved and maintained.
According to data published by the diamond car manufacturer, 3,167 R5 Turbo 2 units were produced between 1982 and 1986. As for the Renault 5 Turbo, 1,690 units were assembled between 1980 and 1982. Leaving the Dieppe factory, the R5 Turbo and Turbo 2 are powered by the same 160-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, mounted at the rear.
It is important to recall the differences between the Renault 5 Turbo and the Turbo 2. Unlike the R5 Turbo, the Turbo 2 does not have certain aluminum body parts such as its openings, but rather steel body parts.
The R5 Turbo 2 is also equipped with a simpler interior from the R5 Alpine Turbo. These modifications were made at the time to reduce the manufacturing costs of the sporty city car, which has become a highly sought-after youngtimer today.
