Remember, during the Monaco GP 2024, Mercedes-AMG unveiled the PureSpeed speedster in the form of a concept car, the first model in an exclusive series called “Mythos.” Today, like an early Christmas present for fans of the star brand, they reveal everything about the speedster, which notably features a Halo, borrowed, of course, from F1 cars.
In Monaco last May, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Concept (pictured below) was presented with Lewis Hamilton in attendance. This Sunday, December 8, 2024, the British driver, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion (2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), will drive a “Silver Arrow” for the last time at the Abu Dhabi GP before joining Scuderia Ferrari in 2025. The limited edition (250 units) Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed adopts the F1 car’s Halo system and is, most notably, Germany’s answer to the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 speedsters (2018).
In terms of design, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is directly inspired by the 1,063 hp hybrid V6 Mercedes-AMG One, although its silhouette somewhat recalls the Mercedes-AMG GT.
At the front, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed speedster features a large opening similar to that of the Mercedes-AMG One. However, the standout feature is undoubtedly the Halo protecting the two occupants.
Behind the two bucket seats, the buttresses are reminiscent of the most sensational Mercedes-Benz cars in automotive history, such as the 300 SLR. Aerodynamic studies dictated the lines of the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed speedster with multiple carbon fiber elements: front splitter, side skirts, aerodynamic appendages for the rear bumper, etc.
The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have even optimized the airflow around the “Christmas speedster” down to its 21-inch forged aluminum wheels. They are equipped with carbon fiber covers to improve brake cooling.
A notable point, the predominantly red livery of the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is “Le Mans red.” This color stands out on the German speedster’s body, referencing the red car that allowed Mercedes-Benz to win the legendary Sicilian race Targa Florio in 1924. The number 10 visible on the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is taken from the race number of the Mercedes-Benz at the 1924 Targa Florio.
At the rear, the black rectangular shapes of the AMG logo add even more sportiness to the PureSpeed speedster, celebrating 100 years of Mercedes-Benz’s victory at the 1924 Targa Florio.
In May, in Monaco, Mercedes-AMG did not showcase the interior of the PureSpeed speedster. Today, this has been rectified, along with revealing the engine of this incredible windshield-less machine.
Balancing refinement and sportiness, with a dose of high-tech dear to Mercedes-AMG, the PureSpeed speedster offers the perfect compromise between luxury and promising driving sensations. Notably, Mercedes-AMG will provide the fortunate buyers of the PureSpeed with streamlined and connected helmets, allowing them to listen to music via speakers and communicate.
In terms of engine, some may be disappointed, as under its long front hood, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed houses the 4.0-liter biturbo V8 that remains at 585 hp and 800 Nm of torque. This V8 is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, enabling it to achieve 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 315 km/h.
Finally, the price of the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed speedster has not been disclosed, but the 250 units to be produced are reportedly already sold. Let’s conclude with the official presentation video of the speedster.
