$36,344,960, nearly €35,000,000, is the amount for which the Ferrari 250 LM, known as the “private” Ferrari that secured Ferrari’s victory at Le Mans in 1965, was sold last Wednesday in Paris. This fantastic Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti was sold at an auction organized by RM Sotheby’s at the Louvre in Paris. Before Ford’s historic 1966 triple win, Ferrari won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times.

In 1965, Ferrari achieved a double win at Le Mans with two 250 LMs powered by 3.3L V12 engines. The victorious car, campaigned by the North American Racing Team (NART), was sold in Paris for over €35,175,000, akin to an “automotive Mona Lisa” near Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. This win, 60 years ago at Le Mans, was thanks to drivers Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt. Relive this RM Sotheby’s auction through the video below.

The 250 LM by Scaglietti, chassis number 5893, is one of the six assembled 250 LMs, making it a rare car. Combined with its 1965 Le Mans victory and six Le Mans participations, it explains the significant amount it fetched at the Rétromobile salon in Paris. According to RM Sotheby’s, this 250 LM chassis 5893 is the only private Ferrari victorious at Le Mans.
